A simple description of the food chain begins with a plant which is eaten by a caterpillar which is eaten by a cricket which is eaten by a spider which is eaten by a lizard ... This description may be from another edition of this product.
I have taught about food chains for 5 years to my students but had always been frustrated by one fact. Every kid's book I had found on the subject did not deal with the final key step - the death of an animal which is decomposed and eventuallly returns to soil and helps nourish a new plant. This book discusses this step in the cycle with very simple - 5 and 6 year old friendly - text and pictures. When last we read it in my 1st and 2nd grade class, thre was clamour for repeated readings and acting out of the "story".Sure, the subject may be a bit gruesome if you're cuddling up for a bedtime read, but for getting a concept accross to young minds - this book fills a significant gap.I highly recommend it.
