This movie is one of my favorites strictly due to the great homey interiors and New York scenery on clear, bright days and rainy evenings and the charming personalities (if misguided) . I’ve never been to New York but due to films like this one and Woody Allen’s films, I love ❤️ NY and, through film, being exposed to the vivid contrast with my small agricultural town in rural California. I love reading and having books around me and Meg Ryan’s character’s (Kathleen) bookshop is a vintage dream come true. SPOILER ALERT: I don’t understand why the ending pretends to be a happy one when Kathleen’s bookshop that she inherited from her mother is destroyed by this Hanks character. How can she accept him, even if he is funny and charming, he ruined a NY treasure and her heritage in one fell swoop when he easily could have been supportive of this NY treasure that was not only Kathleen’s livelihood but her dream. Horrible ending but predictable, especially if you have seen the old James Stewart movie “Little Shop Around the Corner”, which actually did have a happy ending, but that’s a whole other story. Jean Arthur’s character is so fun and unexpectedly naughty but she, too, let’s her friend down. So, even though the story destroys her dreamy bookshop and is is a big bummer, I get caught up in the settings and the humor and the charming characters and have watched it more than once. I suppose there could be redemption for the storyline if you look upon it as a story of the inevitable acceptance of change. But I bet their implied marriage doesn’t last. Ha!
