Necessary for any parent with a critically ill child

As a PICU RN, I work with parents who must face life and death choices. While there is never an easy answer, it is so beneficial to read Dr. Johnson's book to assist in your decision making. Recently I gave this book to family of a dying child. They ultimately removed life support while being able to provide a loving environment for their child. This book is invaluable!!!!

interesting to read a doctor's perspective

This book explains what goes on in a pediatric intensive care unit, from a doctor's point of view. Dr. Johnson's use of specific cases to explain various concepts and techniques is quite effective. The author's frank assessment of medical technology's limits is somewhat sobering. However, I think it's important to have a realistic view of the capabilites of medical care. On a another note, the "Crucial Advice for Parents" section at the end of each chapter is a little weird. For instance, I found the mix of points ranging from advice on medical insurance to the symptoms of lupus to be particularly odd. Besides this aspect, however, I found the book very easy to read.

Excellent

Johnson brings his vast experience to the general public through this well-written, sensitive book in a very accessible way. His anecdotes are much better than a strictly clinical description of what you will face when dealing with PICU. Parents need not be paralyzed by their critically injured or ill children; if only every parent who experiences this trauma had this book as a guide and handbook, the level of care of their children would be seriously improved and their own pain and anxiety will be tempered through this guidance.
