Yet In Arcadia dramatizes the lives and deaths of the men and women from all parts of the country who have come to live in the picturesque town, Sausalito, on San Francisco Bay. The central figure in the novel, a free-lance writer, is called upon to memorialize these lives in obituaries and eulogies. The story traces his marriages, his family life with his children, and his local friendships that have led to his unique position in the community. The novel ends when he must reconcile the deaths of his two wives, his first, early in childbirth and the second after a long marriage in town.
