Book Overview

For some reason at just that moment, Garnet glanced up at the house and thought she saw a shadowy figure standing at the window of the downstairs master bedroom in the wing Malcolm shared with Rose. With a little clutching sensations, Garnet wondered if Rose had seen her talking with Malcolm and if she minded that Garnet's had been the last farewell. Garnet shrugged and walked back into the garden. What difference did it make one way or the other?...

Yankee Bride and Rebel Bride

It did remind me of Gone with the Wind, but that is part of what makes this story so enticing. The war between the Union and Confederates showed that no family was left unscathed by the war for freedom. While I was enthralled with Rose, Garnet seemed to out shine her in the end. Rose is remembered through this tragedy while Garnet suffers from the wish she made years earlier. It was not a fairy tale ending like those so-far. In the end, it is well thought out and practical.

Heart Wrenching

In this book Peart conveys bawdy flirtation and titillating suspense in an age of Civil War. The insufferable Garnet in her blind love for Malcolm Montrose--wreaks havoc for Malcolm's bride Rose Montrose. She then proves her ruthlessness when after poor Rose dies--she dreams of a life with Malcolm. I was glad when he returned home years later, with a new bride! But, I had to pity Rose, since her ruthless rival outlives her!

book freak-Excellent!!!!!!

This book was Stupendous! It had a great history lesson too. It is great for anyone who loves the show "Gone With The Wind", which to me this book has a great similarity in characters to that story too.

Good reading, good romance, and a history lesson as well.

The first half tells the anguish of differences between the North and the South before the Civil War. The second half tells the actual horrors and how the Southern families coped. Excellent characterization! A very, very well done story
