World History: information made interesting

World History covers a vast amount of information in a moderate amount of space and explains much of it in an interesting, understandable way, giving a clear overview of history supported by interesting details. This is truly a WORLD history text; Western history is certainly balanced with Asian and African history, etc. The illustrations (excluding the nudes), the excerpts from actual historical literature and documents, and the comparative essays add a lot of appeal. The emphasis on the life of women throughout history is also intriguing, though perhaps overdone.

Not read yet...

I have to confess, I just ordered the book, mostly based on the authors. But you can't possibly go wrong with them. As professors of History at the university I attended, I had numerous classes that they each taught, and I had direct interaction with them on separate occasions (I interned with Dr. Spielvogel, and I'm still waiting for Dr. Duiker to return a book I lent to him in 1992...). They are both absolutely first-rate historians, writers and lecturers, and I'm thrilled to discover that they have collaborated on a project like this, especially considering their different aspects of history.

Excellent Survey

I am a teacher that frequently uses this text in World HIstory classes. This textbook is among the best as a balanced view of World History. Duiker and Spielvogel strive to overcome the western-centric bias of most of the world history textbooks available. (Including several by Spielvogel himself) The text is fact intensive, but is easily understandable and avoids unnecessarily flowery verbiage. THe text is straight and to the point. I believe the book does an excellent job of giving the reader a fair and comprehensive view of all of the World's History. Making sense of 10,000 plus years in 900 pages is a fair accomplishment.
