The books tells the amazing life story of William Z Foster who was the long time leader of the Communist Party USA and spent his entire adult life fighting for the labor movement and various radical causes. He grew up in poverty in Philadelphia and educated himself by reading books on subjects such as history, sociology, and science. The books shows how Foster gradually moved toward Marxism and Fosters various contributions toward Marxist thought in his many books. The story of Fosters life is also the story of the various radical movements that he was apart of such as the IWW, the Socialist Party, the fight for unemployment rights, the defense of the Scotbsboro Boys, the fight against fascism, and the Progressive Party. Foster worked with the greatest radicals of his time such as Big Bill Haywood, John Reed, Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, Paul Robeson, W.E.B. Dubois and Soviet leader Joseph Stalin.
