Book Overview

A tenderly illustrated, medieval-times tale that can encourage children to hold fast to God's truth amid the world's confusing messages. While discovering which knight wins the fair maiden's hand, children will learn that if they learn the song of the King, God will lead them through the darkness and show them what is right.

Blatantly Christian and wonderful

So I love this book. It's blatantly Christian, but for a story that is basically told as a fairy tale? Wonderful. I still bawl every time I read it. The story is simple enough: three knights have a race through a dangerous wood in order to win the hand of the beautiful princess. The greatest peril of the wood is mocking voices... this leads into plenty of other Christian symbols that hopefully will be appreciated for what they are. Some Christians may complain of just how their God is used, but I think they're just trying to whine. It's enchanting as a fairy tale and as a powerful message.

A Parable for Children

Lucado has a gift to teach important lessons through simple parables. I read this to my children, and they immediately picked out that the characters were a comparison of Christ and us, and our roles. They asked questions, discussed what they thought things meant, and asked to read this book again and again. My seven year old says this is her favorite book, and has read it on her own many times. The illustrations are wonderful, but the story itself is why I will treasure this book.

Learn the Song by heart

"The three strongest warriors in the kingdom each wanted to marry the daughter of the king. The king had promised each a chance--a test to see which was worthy of his daughter. And now the time for the test had arrived." As the knights, Carlisle, Alon, and Cassidon learn of their test they feel a stab of fear. They are all given the choice of one companion to accompany them on their quest. So who will win the hand of the princess? Carlisle the strongest, Alon the the swiftest or Cassidon the wisest? And how did the winner do it? This is storytelling perfection. Wonderful story, lively characters, gorgeous, expressive illustrations, good use of conflict, interesting resolution, and strong takeaway value. A story your child or grandchild should enjoy over and over and learn many valuable lessons that he/she can apply to his/her life. Of all of Max's children stories I read to my daughter, this is my favorite. Soar!

Another Great Story By Max Lucado

Max Lucado writes amazing stories for children and this one is no different. Through out the whole story you learn more about God and how He can and will be with you all the way throughout life's journeys. Every time i open one of his books I learn so much. Mr. Lucado's books especially poin out good Christian teachings in ways that children can understand the best. I can't wait until I read the rest of the book like this one. I read this book in about 5 minutes and I loved it. The story is a simple one but an amazing one. I grew up in church and the moral of this is one tha tI have heard many times already. Thsi story put it into different words that I know my children will love as much as I did. Each prince is given the chance to marry the king's daugher but first they must make it through the forest. No one has even entered the forset and then left it. THe king's special glute will guide them. If they loose site if it they will be lost. How do they make it though? Which one will make it first? Who will be thir one companion? So many questions. Read the book it is a childrens book made for all ages. Enjoy the lessons hidden within

A quest worth the trip

Three princes are given the same challenge: Be the first to travel through the woods and arrive at the king's castle. The winner may marry the king's daughter. No one who has entered the woods has ever come back. Each may choose a traveling companion. Each has the promise of hearing the king's flute three times a day to help guide him. But only one will find out who will be with him all the way. This book captured the imaginations of all the boys in my class.
