Fifteen-year-old Marylou Britton's no stranger to life as a foster child. While life with "Aunt" Bonnie and "Uncle" Ed was never great, it also wasn't as bad as it became in recent years, when the two developed a drinking problem. Still, Marylou is determined to ride out the next few years, no matter what. She's thrilled when Bonnie and Ed, wanting more cash, decide to take in another child, two-year-old Sam. However, her happiness is short-lived when Sam turns out to be biracial...and Ed a hateful racist who delights in tormenting him. After Ed goes a step too far, Marylou decides to take matters into her own hands. Packing just a few essentials, she takes Sam and flees. Hitchhiking to another town, the gravity of the situation finally kicks in, and Marylou wonders what on earth a teenage girl alone with a child and no money can possibly do. She's about to admit defeat and head home when she meets Danny, another teenage runaway who invites her to come stay in the home he has created with still other teenage runaways. Although Marylou and Danny quickly become close, trusting and helping one another, Marylou also learns that not everyone she meets is as decent. Her conscience finally gets the better of her, and she decides that she should head back, for Sam's sake if not her own. But, just as Marylou is about to take action, tragedy strikes...
