Excellent (but dated) introduction to programming & concepts

One of the best introductory books for C++ programming in Windows as well as coverage of Artifical Life concepts. Light hearted, but not a dummies book. Only problem is the book dated as far as Visual C++ goes. The book was written for version 1 of MS C++.
