A riveting look into the personal lives of our presidents through the eyes of their White House doctor
"An interesting, behind-the-scenes glimpse of life at the White House." - Kirkus Reviews Dr. Connie Mariano served 9 years at the White House under Presidents George H.W. Bush, William J. Clinton, and George W. Bush. She participated in world headline-making news events and traveled all over the world. She cared...
This book is a great American story about Dr. Mariano's voyage from a Navy officer to the White House doctor. She gives an inside look at the relationship between the President and his doctor, along with the various hurdles she had to overcome. The pressures of her family life mixed with the obstacles of sex and ethnicity that she encountered, make her memoir a very compelling tale. I highly recommend this book!

While I normally read Sci-Fi or other fiction, I do occasionally enjoy a biography or other non-fiction work. This book was an easy read for me for several reasons. I live in the Washington suburbs and like a lot of people here tend to follow politics closely. I also know Connie and her first husband and was quite close to them long before she became the White House Doctor. They had moved away after Connie's graduation from Med School here as they were from California originally. When the moved back to the area, I think we got together once. At the time, I knew they were busy, but now I see just how busy they were and why. I also always enjoy a true success story and that is what this is, an amazing success story. I feel obligated to comment on another review that was submitted. I would have bet money on what I thought Connie's political leanings were back when I knew her and obviously would probably have been wrong. But I think the book is pretty clear that she did not let that influence her job. I know that she was very close to the elder Bushes as well as the Clintons, but it was under the Clintons that her role expanded, so I don't find it strange that she would have strong feelings regarding the Clintons. Plus, she was with the Clintons for two full terms, and only part of one term with George H. W. Bush. I thought the tales of her youth and the culture she came from were fascinating and had never heard any of that part of the story. For anyone who enjoys reading about success and sacrifice and perhaps some backroom drama in the highest office of the land, the book is definitely worth reading. There is no political agenda in the book.

This book was a great read! It provides a glimpse into the White House and chronicles many trips overseas with 3 presidents. Not only does it show the life of a successful doctor, but it describes the effect it has on loved ones. Truly provides a perspective on the White House unlike any others I have seen. Seems like some other reviewers tend to be focusing on the glamour of working with the president. On the contrary, Dr. Mariano regards the job as a duty, not as a vacation. She is such a great role model for our society to read about.
