Where We Buried the Sun

This is an amazing story of Soviet teenagers who dared to call the Stalinist spade a spade in the early 1950s -- just before the end of Stalinism. While their elders trembled like rats in the shadow of the Soviet secret police, these kids formed an anti-Soviet group. All they did was meet and talk about how things really were in the police state. This was enough to get them all arrested and worse... In this book, one of these former adolescents -- Alla Tumanov -- talks about her experience in the Gulag where she was sent for 25 years. She never gave up hope and survived in the cold of the arctic night. Along the way she met all kinds of fascinating, frightened and villainous people running the gamut of Soviet society. An extraordinary experience indeed. This is a well-written, intelligent book. Thumbs up.
