A guidebook for the deserts of life

I wrote the review below in 2000, anonymously, for the previous paperback edition of the book. I feel this book shouldn't go un-recommended so I'm copying it here. =) Since 2000, I've re-read the book another half-dozen times, whenever I found myself in yet another (different kind of) desert. God never fails to use it again. Each time, I see things in it that I didn't notice before--because they were waiting to be sent to me when I needed them! ------------------- Jennifer Rees Larcombe is an amazing woman of God, while still being very ordinary and completely human. I have read and enjoyed many of her books. She spent many years ill and in a wheelchair before God miraculously healed her. When she wrote about her experiences in her books "Beyond Healing" and "Unexpected Healing," she spoke freely about her struggles, mistakes, sins, doubts and depression, but also showed how God brought her through for His own glory. Sharing so honestly in her books brought an outpouring of response from others who had had similar experiences, and eventually she realized that writing a book about the "deserts" of life would be an encouragement to others still going through them. Many feel that Christians should not struggle with doubts or depression, so guilt is added to the mix, and there are many misunderstandings regarding the subject of suffering. Jennifer weaves together many people's real-life experiences, shows how God meets the need of each one, and discusses the many causes of and types of "deserts" a Christian may pass through. This is a very important book! I have given away so many copies that I currently do not own one. This is how I remember the book after reading it at least twice. It helped me immensely both times. I'm here to buy another one, to send to a friend who is passing through a desert! By the way, one of the best things about it is the way Jennifer has structured it to be easy to read in short bits. A person who is suffering and feels unable to think clearly or concentrate on reading can pick it up, read any sentence, paragraph, page, or number of pages, and God can speak through it.
