WHERE ARE THE CHILDREN? by Mary Higgins Clark After reading this I understand why Higgins became the “Queen of Suspense”. This story, based on a true crime, of Nancy Harmon and her missing children hooks you right from the start. First published in 1975, I feel this story has aged pretty well. The writing is simple and direct. The author doesn’t waste time by drawing out scenes or giving too many superfluous details. The downside to that is the characters are a little one dimensional. I enjoyed this book. Very interesting I had the book figured out way before the ending. It was an easy read for me. I love Mary Higgins Clark books. She writes very well. The book was good just not one of my favorite books but still a good book. The book was a good read overall.

Her first mystery, I believe. Thrilling, chilling! It kept my attention, even though I have read it many times before. Well-written, believable characters. I enjoy her older works the most. This mystery is about a woman who has fled her past, and an accusation of murdering her children, to start a new life in New England . She marries again, has two more children, and life is getting back to normal. Until she goes outside to fetch her children from their playtime one morning, only to discover they are missing.

If you like books that will leave you in suspense from the very first page to the very last, this is definitely the book for you! Mary Higgns creates a mother's nightmare when Nancy Harmon finds her two children abducted and then brutally murdered. On top of all this, her husband commits suicide and she was accused as the murderer, but was left loose when the prime suspect runs away. Six years after this incident, she cuts and dyes her hair and moves all the way to the other side of the country. She re-marries and again has two more kids, Michael and Missy. As soon as she begins to settle down, the nightmare happens all over again. Michael and Missy have dissapeared adn soon the whole town knows of her identity. Everyone jumps to conclusions about her, and they all wonder how a mother could murder her children and then do it once again. Keep reading as the mystery begins to be solved as people dig into the past to reveal the horrors of the present!

One of my favorite books of all time! You feel that you are experiencing everything the main character is. The book is about a young woman whose children have disappeared. Years earlier, her two children from her previous marriage disappeared. Naturally, when people find out about her past (she moved to a new location to make a fresh start) virtually everyone suspects her of murdering her second family of children. Adding to the suspenseful tone of the book is the tension created by the impending Nor'easter. When I first read this book, I'd never been to the Northeast, but the book made me feel as if I were there. A great tale of the suspicions people harbor -- suspicions that cause the main character to doubt herself and wonder if she's insane and really did hurt her previous and current children. As the reader wonders this too, the suspense continues to build. It's obvious that if she wasn't insane to begin with, the strain of facing the same horror a second time may very well push her over the brink.

When I started to read this book it, immediately drew me into the story. The first part starts off talking about the death of her children and brought you into the action. It makes you wonder what is going to happen later in the story. Continuously throughout the book more and more information leads you to find out exactly where the children had disappeared to. Also throughtout the story she brought in more characters that knew little bits and pieces about the missing children. Finally it all came together. It was a very well written piece. Clark is very descriptive in what she is describing. You get your own visual of the setting. This is one of those stories that you know all the information and you want to tell the characters in the story. Clark really has a way of writing and making the reader enjoy her stories. I really enjoyed reading it and finished it within a few days cause I couldn't set it down.

I think Mary Higgins Clark was at her best with this book; Where Are the Children. It was well written, and it kept me thinking constantly throughout the book. She made the story seem so realistic by letting the characters feelings and emotions relate to what other people in the same circumstances would have felt like. I really enjoyed reading this book. It was very descriptive about what was happening to the characters. Mary Higgins Clark makes reading enjoyable and relaxing. I did find the book a little hard to follow in the beginning, but the rest of the book made up for it. So, I decided to give Where Are the Children 5 stars. It was about a lady named Nancy Eldredge and her family. She was married to Carl Harmon and had two children, Peter and Lisa. She was very happy, and then one day her children disappeared. Her children were found dead and Nancy was framed for the murders. During the trial her husband and closest friend went against her. She decides to start a new life, and so she changed her appearance. She moved to Cape Cod and married Ray Eldredge, so that she could try to get rid of her horrible memories from the past. Nancy and Ray had two children named Mike and Missy, who were helping her move on with her life. Just when her life is going the way she wanted it to, Mike and Missy disappeared, leaving nothing but a little red mitten as a clue for the police to follow. Nancy couldn't remember much from the day her kids disappeared, so the police thought that it was her again. Will Nancy be committed for the crime again, or will it be someone else this time? The book has a very surprising ending. Read the book to answer all of the puzzling questions, and to find out what happens to Nancy and her family. In my opinion it's a book well worth reading.
