When the Butterflies Came

Some may call throwing in a romantic subplot to sweeten up your readers cheap. And it is. But it's 2021. Who doesn’t like cheap??? In all seriousness, there's a lot of things making me rate this higher than I probably should. There is a soft spot in my heart for books that involve mysterious keys. I don't know why. It's the same with books where you go into a room and suddenly there's 2000 doors leading to mysterious places (which thankfully, this book didn't have, or I'd have had to rate it 5 stars). Something about special keys and doors make me so happy. Then you've got the magical butterflies, and the island setting, and the love story, and just <3333 I know this book has flaws. The writing style is not great, the plotline with the mother is weird, and the ending is cheap. If I was being objective, I'd probably rate it 3 cows, or perhaps 2 and a calf. But it's so -my- kind of a book I can't help but give it 4. It didn't even give me the heartwarming grandma-granddaughter vibes I desired. It was just so... mystical.
