rubys love of candy

To grow a garden of vegtables is how we encourage our grandaughter to eat healthy. To encourage the mind to create and imagine, the book gives details in the form of candy plants and colors that allows us to have the desires for a sweettooth in a candyland. We inserted her name in the story to personalise the story to her.

My children and I absolutely loved this book. From the story itself to the funny and whimsical illustrations, you won't go wrong adding a copy of WHEN RUBY TRIED TO GROW CANDY to your library. Ruby Louise Hawthorn is sure that a mean old lady must live on the other side of the fence. But when her ball bounces over that dividing line, Ruby has no choice but to leave a note (in case she perishes) and use a ladder to climb into the next yard. There she discovers the most amazing sight. Miss Wysterious is growing teacups from trees and flowers with clock faces, and has a yard full of playing cards, toasters, shoes, and other fairly fantastical items. When Miss Wysterious shares her jellybeans with Ruby and instructs her to plant them, she's at first quite dubious that anything will grow. You can't grow candy, for goodness sake! Until the day comes, after weeks of working in the garden, that Ruby and Miss Wysterious make an astonishing discovery. Like I said, this is a delightful story, one that is perfect for reading together. If only I could figure out how to have such a green thumb! Reviewed by: Jennifer Wardrip, aka "The Genius"

lollipop of a book

My kids and I are spellbound by this scrumptious picture book. Ruby (who might be Alice in Wonderland's younger sister) takes us over the fence to get her lost ball. Instead of a duchess it is the grumpy Miss Wysterious who presides over a wacky peep show of a garden where teacups grow on trees. So too do buttons and they'll grow to the size of frying pans--- if you aren't careful. Shoes tend to pop up everywhere like weeds in this soil, but try to grow a sock and you've got yourself a problem. I can't reveal whether lemon sours, jelly beans, and toffee take root with the right amount of watering because that would give the story away. An absolutely wonderful present for delicious grandchildren sweet godchildren and grown ups who aren't afraid of magic. The pictures are edible.
