I spent my summers growing up on the Eastern Shore of Maryland working every kind of job from hauling tomatoes to the cannery and tending chicken houses to lifeguarding on Assateague Island. In the evenings and on weekends Ocean City was my home. I spent many hours watching fishing boats, both commercial and recreational, heading in and out through the inlet at Ocean City but never knew the stories behind them. I ate the local seafood at every restaurant on both sides of the bay and never gave a thought to the effort it took to put it on the table. Beverly Lynch has done a magnificent job of capturing it all. Like the small farmers on the eastern shore of Maryland and the cowboys and ranchers out here in the West where I now live, the Atlantic commercial fisherman is likely a vanishing breed, but an important part of what makes us America. Being a commercial fisherman in the Atlantic is an incredible life. This is a facinating book about them.
