First published more than a century ago, this journal of a woman's life and travels in post-Civil War California and the Northwest is one of the first female accounts of the region. This description may be from another edition of this product.
An excellent book for anyone interested in history, travel, women's studies, or the early settlement of the Pacific Northwest. Leighton writes with a accessible, personable style, and makes wonderful non-judgemental observations about the wide range of people she meets. Her sketches of Native Americans and Chinese are particularly poignant and enlightened for her era. Leighton was unafraid of roughing it, and experienced some travel adventures that make thrilling reading.
