Book Overview

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize, the first woman playwright to win a Tony Award, Wendy Wasserstein was a Broadway luminary. But with her high-pitched giggle and unkempt curls, she projected an image of warmth and familiarity. Everyone knew Wendy Wasserstein. Or thought they did. A compassionate and deeply informative book.

Complexities of a brilliant life, ever focused on others, are woven together in a tapestry which reveals terrible questions. Why was Wendy's mother allowed to ridicule Wendy's weight? Who could and should have stopped this torture? Did Wendy's mother's belittling both Wendy's weight and achievements cause Wendy to take the killing risk of doubtful and dangerous fertility medications? Would Wendy's unacknowledged objective to win her mother's acceptance as a woman? So many of us, male and female, are injured by rejecting and sadistic parents. I wish Wendy had disowned her mother's incessant sadism before she took the fertility drugs which may have caused her death.
