The author has a wonderful command of old Scots and he brings the past alive with this story . The conflict between the Church and the old Pagan ways of rural Scotland is very much to the fore of the novel .The language and the description are excellent and the momentum carries you along . Some aspects of the Warlocks powers and his ability to use them are not always obvious to the reader, but then it would appear that they are not always obvious to the Warlock either!
