Enchanting story

Every young man (and woman) should be lucky enough to have a mentor such as Peter has in Harv; in his understated way, Harv leads Peter toward manhood. The story is set in the Colorado mountains and the author's love of these mountains is shown in his descriptions of the events and the creatures of his story. A most enjoyable book and we would recommend it without reservation. Dianne & Joe Clay, Merritt, NC

Good Writing!

Good writing! And a delightful read. Go elk hunting in the Colorado Rockies while enjoying the comfort of your own arm chair!

Wapiti Spirit reminds us of our natural world and why we should be in it!

I wish I could be heard by all those parents who hear how bored their boys are, even after you've spent a gazillion dollars on Wii and DS. Wapiti Spirit takes the reader out of the confines of any and every school/town/suburban(or not) neighborhood and lets the senses feel and smell the outdoors.Mr. Houston's story of finding the stuff inside a boy who is preoccupied with unsatisfying peer challenges keeps you out on some mountain and inside the head of a good kid gone a bit scared. I feel the story will inspire boys to go outside and find how they measure up to nature and maybe some solitude. A good story told by an author who obviously has been there and been enriched by that of which he tells the tale. My ten year old loved the suspense and interesting info about the real history entwined with the adventure.Buy Wapiti Spirit and set it on someone's bedside table.

The REAL thing

Wapiti Spirit by Michael Houston is a book that targets both the left and right sides of a person's brain. It is both emotionally and artistically stimulating, but also provides a very technical and realistic view into the world of hunting for young people. But, what makes this book so much better than other hunting stories on the bookshelves? IT'S HONEST! So many stories about young hunters never touch on the harder, and realistic, aspects of hunting. The freezing wind, the endless trudge through snow toward an invisible target, and my all-time favorite, the whining and complaining of a young man because he needs to learn patience in the hunt. Wapiti Spirit touches on all these critical aspects of a genuine hunting trip and does so with flare and excitement that will leave the reader wondering what will happen. And to top it all off, Houston manages to tie essential aspects of a young person's life (such as love and the need to be "cool") into a hunting trip smothered in lessons of true, real-life hunting ethics and responsibility. Overall, a terrific coming-of-age book for any young person (boy or girl), and a great reminder about the true ethics of hunting for those "grown ups" who may have forgotten...

A must read for the adventurous soul!

What a refreshing new take on a young man's first hunting trip. I learned so much about ethical hunting, and camping in the winter on Colorado's high peaks. It was an easy and thouroughly enjoyable book. I couldn't put it down!
