Waiting for Time

We travelled to Newfoundland two years ago on a six week road trip, and this book completed the trip after reading Random Passages, also by the same author. Growing up in Canada, Newfoundland was allways a magical "other country" to me (although now it is a province of Canada) and these stories truly enhanced that feeling!

I loved this book because I love books about people's lives that are earthy and real and deal with hard times. Please read Random Passage first by the same author. The two books together are wonderful and are connected historically. If you only read Random Passage you will be like a person that has a sip of water and dying of thirst. A lot of unanswered questions that this book ties up. If you ever read the book The Shipping News I think you will like this book also. But read Random Passage first. Please.

This second novel by Bernice Morgan is one of those wonderful stories that you just can't put down. It is her second installment to the saga of the Andrews family who settle on a bleak fishing outpost on the coast of Newfoundland in the early 1800's. Her characters are so rich, and the historical times so well represented that you feel yourself disappear into the book. I can't recommend this book highly enough! Just be sure you read her first installment, Random Passage, first.
