Eleven year old Amy must face losing the next closest thing she has to a mother since she was 2 yrs. old, and her parents passed away. Doff, the housekeeper for Amy and her grandfather Judge Ryker, is faced with her mother's failing health in England and must return to help her. Amy befriends a new girl to town who is in her class in school. Violetta arrives with her mother in search of Violetta's missing father. Violetta's mother has a history of dragging herself and her daughter from town to town in search of the man who abandoned both of them years before. Newton Grove, Amy's town, is just one more town she believes he has gone to --- or may have been seen in. Amy and Violetta seem like unlikely friends because both have their backs up about the things happening in their lives. Amy doesn't want to face the fact that Doff must leave them and seeks a plan to make her stay. Violetta is sick of being the "new girl" in yet one more town/school. She has built walls around herself to protect her heart. When neither are expecting to, they become good friends who help each other through the struggles of life. A good book!
