Volkswagen: The Air Cooled-Era in Color

The articles about the Beetle, it's origins, it's production history, are well documented in this book, but there is nothing here that hasn't been covered in other Volkswagen Bug books. The reason I ordered this book was the hope that the Karmann Ghia, the 411, the Transporter, and especially the Notchback, Squareback, and Fastback models would be mentioned. I was not disappointed. I found the page 78 over-head photo comparing a VW Van to what appears to be a GMC or Chevrolet Suburban to be interesting; the VW has almost the same cargo capacity, but it much shorter as there is no front hood, as the vehicle is rear engined. That said, the VW was also woefully underpowered and the GM product would not be strained with a full load the way the VW product would. The Beetle, Transporter, and Karmann Ghia are thoroughly covered in this book, but I wish there was a bit more coverage of the 411 (2 pages is very scant) and as a fan of the 1500/1600 Notchback, Squareback, and Fastback vehicles (as they were marketed as in Canada) I wish there were a few more pictures of these interesting and well styled (to my eye) cars.
