It,s kind of fun to go back a few years and remember the big goings on at the time.Virtual Doonesbury takes us back to 1996,and the middle of Clinton's Presidency.This book is a fun reminder of the time. Trudeau came up with a great Icon for Clinton,a waffle,floating in the air,often with hot butter dripping off it.And along with that he used a time bomb with the fuse lit,for Newt Gringrich ,who was the Speaker of House and a Republican. What a combination it was;they actually got some things done that were in the interests of America.Some things never seem to change,Clinton,and the Liberals were making a big fuss over "Conservative Hate Radio" ;just like Obama and the Liberals are doing today over Fox News today.The mainstream media is still dominated by the Left while the Right continues to dominate "Talk Radio". One of the issues captivating the news was the "O J Simpson Trial, with Boopsie as an alternate jurer.Boy,what a turn of events.OJ got off;but lived to have another day in court.We couldn't believe it when he got convicted of armed robbery trying to get back his sport memoribilia,and now,13 years later is in the "clink"..and all but forgotten about by Trudeau and everyone else. Probably ,one of the great turning points in the strip occured here,when JJ runs off from Mike and his daughter,and takes up with Zeke. I loved the reminder about Whitewater;with Bill wondering ""husbands and wives never talk anymore!" Someone suggests "maybe Hillary should resign as First Lady".Then Trudeau comes up with this corker ,with Bill wondering,"Would I be handling the interviews for her replacement?". I find it interesting to compare the strip in 96 with today. Tyudeau seems a bit lost of where to take it.Omama has been the President for a year now.There is a ton of fodder around for Trudeau's satire cannon,but he doesn't seem to want to touch it.Obama's Chicago connections don't seem to interest him.He did great with Newt as Speaker,but doesn't seem to know Nancy P exists.He could really work over Cheney,and while Biden,provides even more opportunity for ridicule, he ignores him. Trudeau,hasn't even come up with an Icon for Obama yet,and it's over a year.In '96 he had a ball over the selling off national assets and resourses,and hitting the cigarette companies;but doesny't seem to want to deal with Gore and the Global Warming Scam,the Stimulas and associated Pork";Like Obama,he ignores Islamic Terrorists,and hardly even dealt with Maddox. Come on,Gary,we are still out here as loyal fans;and we hope you are not getting tired of it or worse;just no longer seeing the opportunities for satire these pols keep coming up with. This book is a great review of some great satarical comments from a few years ago. What's happened to the great political humor,has America lost it's sense of humor.
