Virginia Folk Legends

I love the history behind this book. I love to listen to stories told that are now forgotten or unheard. This is the perfect collection to my folklore book section in my library.

Wonderful fun book, I especially enjoyed that it was a BIT darker, (not excessively so) something I always miss with the modern, cleaned up versions of folk tales. One thing that makes these legends amazing is that they were ALL collected between 1937-1942, transcribed as part of a New Deal project to improve poverty during the Great Depression. I loved the notations at the beginning of each story that indicated where and when the story was first heard, the sources’ name and sometimes age, and occasionally other pertinent info. (Though some are marked simply “anonymous”) I really enjoyed this book and all the interesting, somewhat dark folk legends. If you’re into folk tales, ghost stories and legends in Virginia, you’ll love it.
