Vherses: A Celebration of Outstanding Women

An illustrated collection of fourteen poems honoring famous women from Emily Dickinson and Anne Frank to Eleanor Roosevelt and the Williams sisters. Each poem somehow reflects the spirit of each person, right down to the meter, rhyme (or lack thereof), and form. The verses about the Williams sisters, for example, are written for two voices that take turns reciting -- just like the back and forth of a tennis match -- while Martha Graham's free verse tribute uses unorthodox capitilization and spacing to mimic the style of her choreography. Remarkably good poetry on all fronts. But really, would you expect anything less from J. Patrick Lewis? Fans of books like Amelia And Eleanor Go For A Ride, When Marian Sang: The True Recital of Marian Anderson, and Emily should find much to love here.
