Have read Liz Johnson's debut novel, The Kidnapping of Kenzie Thorn, I knew I could expect a story with good suspense, a strong Christian message and just enough romance. I think I would have to say that I liked Vanishing Act better than Liz's previous novel. The suspense was much better. Nate and Danielle are very realistic characters who are responding to their fears in a believable way. It was hard to put this book down because the suspense just keeps building and along with it, the romance blossoms. It is the perfect mixture of suspense and romance and none of it feels forced or out of place. Overall, I had a good time reading Vanishing Act, which was to be expected because I enjoyed Liz's last book so much. She really knows how to appeal to her readers and she will gain new readers with her perfect balance of suspense and romance.

I enjoyed Liz's first book, The Kidnapping of Kenzie Thorn, which I reviewed here, so I was delighted when she gave me the opportunity to review this newest book. This novel is every bit as good as the first one. Right from the start, I was drawn into the story as Nora flees for her life after witnessing her father's murder. She creates a new life and name in an effort to disappear off the radar of whoever wanted her father dead. When she meets Nate, an FBI agent, she must decide whether to trust him. . . .first with her life, then with her heart. Unexpected twists heightened the suspense. This is a quick read that would be ideal to tuck into your purse or car for those seemingly endless "car line" waits. I look forward to more great stories from Liz! Caveat: My one irritation with this book has absolutely NOTHING to do with Liz or the story. Steeple Hill is a division of Harlequin, and the teaser chapter provided at the end of this book was from their secular "Superromance" market. I felt it was inappropriate to feature in an inspiration novel a book that would be offensive to many believers, especially with the inappropriate language found in the excerpt. So enjoy Liz's story and utilize the discussion questions for your book club or small group, but skip the sneak peek at the end! Thanks to Liz Johnson for sending me this book. I liked how the book had romance, suspense,drama and Christianity all wrapped up and I highly recommend this book. It's great for a small book to sit and read in one setting. I am starting a new category called "great books in small packages". Vanishing Act definitely fits in this category as it may be smaller than your typical book, but it one action packed, suspenseful read highlighted with pieces of romance. Packing this book in my purse was quickly a mistake because once I began reading I was so quickly drawn into the story of Nora and Nate that I couldn't quit reading. I crawled into bed on a Thursday night and didn't turn off the light until after midnight. I love books with great "captchas" -- that is my word for captures your attention from the first page. (I am southern so you know we pronounce words weird.) In the first pages of this book, Nora sees her father murdered right before her eyes. She runs exactly as he tells her to do and hides herself from the men who killed her father. Soon the trial will begin for these men and FBI agent Nate has been given the assignment to find Nora and bring her back so she can be safe until the killers are safely behind bars. Finding Nora is not going to be as easy as he thought despite his FBI training. Keeping her safe once he finds her may not be easy either. Nora may not be ready for the surprise that Nate has to tell her. Once of the best parts of this book was the relationship between Nate and Nora. They are both Christians and it is shown in how they interact with each other. Even when they start to develop feelings for each other their Christian ethics are shown. Nate Anderson is an FBI agent hired to find Nora so he can get her to the safe house. But his last source shows her someplace in this small town of Colorado, but he doesn't know where. Nate enrolls in community college, and takes an auto mechanic course, due in part to the car trouble he had on the way into town. His teacher, Danielle, seems to have a lot of trouble following her, but Nate doesn't feel comfortable dividing his time between her, his class, and trying to locate Nora, but what can he do? Leave her to fend for herself when trouble keeps escalating? Or is it possible that Danielle is hiding something that Nate needs to know? VANISHING ACT is the most recent release by author Liz Johnson, and it is good. Some of the events seem a bit contrived, even out of character, but the over all suspense is enough to keep the pages turning, and it held my interest throughout the book. I enjoyed getting to know Danielle and Nate, and hoped that they would be able to work things out. I did figure out one of the bad "guys" early on, but the other one kept me guessing until later on in the book. Discussion questions are included at the end of the story.
