'Ants march on a picnic and turn it upside down, returning with treats for friends underground.' Up above, the ants are taking over a picnic. But down below is another story. Look closely and you'll find very different worlds living side by side, at a picnic, in the ocean, in the blazing desert, even inside the same two-story home. Sue Redding's bold, wonderfully detailed illustrations hide lots of fun and mischiefkeep an eye out for the red ant and green worm who have snuck into every picture!
I recently purchased this book for my 3 year old grandson. I had read the reviews and expected to 'like' the book, but I LOVE this book. The illustrations are whimsical, funny, thought-provoking and make "reading time" an adventure. The simple concept (above and below) and sparse words, add to the richness of the book; allowing you and your child to experience each page as you discover new scenes and characters. We go to the library on Friday afternoons with our grandson, and we have read more children's books than I can remember; but this book is one not to be forgotten. If you only get one children's book this year - make it this one.
Lots to look at

This book is very simple, but has so many things to look at in the illustrations. Since it's broken in half, the top page is above ground, the bottom is under, and it shows many different settings. My kids (7 and 5) love looking at every little detail. My first grader, who is learning to read, can read this book quite well already. What I love is that each time they look through it, they see something new they never saw before. It's very well done.
Witty and Interactive

Sue Redding's imagination and attention to detail is so rewarding as a parent and a reader. She creates stunning illustrations that allow a child to see the actions presented in each picture, but each page engages the child to create their own story of events. As a parent, I enjoy finding the irony and the wit in each page (NYU Subway platform, the submarine going the wrong way). Our child also likes to find the worm and the ant on every page. I highly recommend this book!
Great for preschoolers

Our four-year-old son loves this book. The saturated colors, detailed illustrations, and the simple concept offers much in the way of discussion about the world and everyday life with preschoolers. When I asked my son what he liked about it, he said, "I just love it, that's all." Enough said.
