Major Phil Ashby already had a reputation for surviving scrapes, where others would - and did - break bones and worse. His strength, resourcefulness and luck had been tested to the full during his... This description may be from another edition of this product.
Unlike other military thrillers, this account of Major Ashby's involvement in, and escape from, a major RUF offensive in Sierra Leone strikes the reader as factual and unembellished. His straightforward manner gives great insights into Sierra Leonean society and the civil war that has raged there, as well as his own personal background of adventurism and military training. Highly readable if you like "real" adventure stories without the fictitious "Rambo" element, but it'd also do well sitting on your shelf as a reference.

I thought this was a great book. I was nervous buying it, because of the military thriller kind of hype and the review by andy mcnab---not because i dislike military thrillers in principle, but because most of them are brainless and badly written. Not only is this well written, but it's interesting on a lot of different levels. Examples: Its descriptions of Sierra Leone and the RUF. What you can learn about the UN and peacekeeping in general, and this mission in particular. There are lots of other good things about the book, but above all it's moving as a story of someone who has done some amazing things, and has a pretty amazing attitute too.

Major Phil Ashby writes a truely absorbing account of his epic escape from the conflict in Sierra Leone, preceded by a fascinating insight into the training and life of a Royal Marine. He also provides an autobiographical background. This book is the most inspiring read I have had for a long time. It is also, in places, hilarious and in others deeply moving, infact the full emotional rollercoaster. Major Ashby engages all types of reader - military and non military, young and old. I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone.
