Green Guides are the way to go

I always purchase a Michelin Green Guide for whatever countries I plan to travel (if they make one) because they are unpretentious, brief in descriptions yet extremely informative, have EVERYTHING you need to know when planning a trip and has excellent, up-to-date info if you buy the most recent edition of the book. Tuscany Green Guide is no exception. Has great maps for the major cities, enough to get you in & out of them and find your hotel, restaurant, etc. Found some excellent tips for out-of-the-way places of interest, as well as suggested itineraries for day trips or several day long trips. This was my bible for our 3 week car trip thru Tuscany & Umbria. Don't know what we would've done without it and plan to get the latest edition the next time we go (if I don't already own it). Not recommended if you're looking for places to stay or detailed restaurant info. The Red Guides have that info.

Essential for travel

The green guide is important for helping you decide what to do -especially when your time is limited. In some cases it provides wonderful detail as you explore churches that you become the walking tour guide. Very helpful when traveling with a group of colleagues and/or college students! It's not expensive and small in size, easy to carry in jacket pocket or bag.

Good as a reference guide

Great reference once you are in Tuscany, but don't try to plan your trip with it.

comprehensive coverage of tourist sites

Excellent coverage of monuments, museums, history, etc. It DOES NOT contain any info on lodging, restaurants, shopping, etc. But for planning your outings and getting around it is very thorough. A 100 page section on Florence, and a concise write-up on even the smallest towns, usually with it's own little map. Plenty of small photos and even floor-plans of large museums. Street map of Florence is good, but does not label all streets, and not a great street index, so a detailed map of your destination is advised, in addition
