Tunjur! Tunjur! Tunjur!: A Palestinian Folktale

I have always loved folktales, and have been sharing well-loved ones with my preschooler. We found this at our local library and it turned out to be a delightful read. "Tunjur! Tunjur! Tunjur!" is a Palestinian folktale that tells the story of a woman who prays for a child, even if it is only a pot, and is granted a pot for a child. The lady takes care of her little pot, who turns out to be naughty, straying far from home and returning with things that don't belong to it. Finally, the little pot learns a hard lesson, and decides to do a bit of 'growing' and learning about right and wrong. The moral element of the story is not heavy-handed, and the entire story has a lively narration throughout, illustrated in bold colors. This is a wonderful folktale to share with young children ,ages 4-8, and a great way to learn about other cultures. Recommended!

Ms. Read has done a great job of making a moralistic tale accessable and inviting. The moral still goes over my preschooler's heads, but the illustrations are engaging.
