Truth Aflame: Theology for the Church in Renewal

I have studied under Larry Hart and recommend him both as a teacher and writer. I like the readability of this book. It is easy to understand and follow as well as is a smooth read. I have trenched through some of the larger works and find them a labor to read. Hart is more grounded in Scripture than in philosophy or reason. You don't have to read a page of philosophical gymnastics to read a sentence of conclusion. It appears he attempts to synthesize his Baptist background with his Charismatic experience. I find it more to be a pendulum swing of one to the other. At least he is makes it clear from what position he is speaking. His sources are also well documented and annotated. I think this work is a good bridge between seminary and the pew.

The book is balanced and very easy to understand. I enjoyed reading it. The book has helped me to appreciate systematic theology and has helped me to understand why(Biblical) theology is essential. The pages of the book seem to come loose easily though, I believe that has to do with the binding of the book pages. The publisher might want to find another method of binding the pages together.

I am now into my third year in Bible College and I have a number of theology books on my shelves, but this one takes the biscuit. It is a scholarly book without being written in unreadable and dry academic lingo. It is so readable that I sat down and read the first 134 pages in one sitting, word for word. Which is kind of unusual, seeing that this is not some thriller or moving novel! What's more, it throws light on some scripture that I hadn't connected the dots with before. I am pretty sure the Holy Spirit was with the author throughout writing this book. The Divine Hand had to have played a part! It is so good I think every bible college student, pastor, cell group leader, in fact every Christian, should have one.

This book was requested on one of my son's Christmas lists. When he opened the box and found this book he was very happy to have received it. I am assuming by his reaction that he will enjoy using this book in his studies.
