Troubled Waters is a modern, suspenseful read

Troubled Waters by Carolyn Keene is the newest book in the Nancy Drew: Girl Detective series. Growing up reading Nancy Drew mysteries, this book had a lot to live up to. Carolyn Keene has constructed a mystery novel that is modern and full of suspense to engage today's young readers. She has totally lived up to this veteran reader's expectations. Nancy and her friends set out to help their town recover from devastating flood damage. While reading, I immediately thought of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Although the events in the town of River Heights were not nearly as catastrophic as the events following Katrina, Keene used her natural ability to encourage the reader to question the events unfolding in the book and draw and revise conclusions throughout this small town ordeal. While remodeling an abandoned building with a team similar to that seen on today's show Extreme Home Makeover, many strange events occur. Most of the trouble is centered on J.C. Valdez, a star basketball player lending his time and talents to help those in need. Is someone out to sabotage his career and reputation or is someone interested in halting the building of hundreds of apartments for those left homeless by the flood? Read Troubled Waters by Carolyn Keene to find out.
