A great read-aloud book!!

Awwwwwhhhh, Mister. Good dog, Mister. Little Alex loves Mister, his very own dog, that is, a dog painted in purple, large on paper and lovingly given bright yellow socks to keep his feet warm. He has one blue eye and one green eye. Flashback to one day earlier. Alex wanted a dog so badly that when his mom asked what he wanted in his lunch bag, he replied, "A dog." His dad asked what he wanted to wear? "A dog." But Alex still wished. Then he drew a dog, a fun dog, a just-to-his-liking dog. Mister goes to school with Alex and stays with him all day and at night under his pillow. Things are fine, "until Tuesday." Mister comes to life and he and Alex play downstairs all night long, wrecking the house. Mister runs away because he knows he has caused trouble for Alex. Alex is so heart-sick he posts flyers everywhere. Days and days later someone finds Mister and mails him back to Alex. Then Alex unfolds Mister, gives him a kiss, refolds him and tucks him in his pocket. Mister is home. I retold the story so you could get a feel for this modern-day fairy tale. Sometimes a person has to take wishing a step further, then take care of that wish. Let me tell you, dear reader, this story struck a chord with the little ones. I'm a children's librarian and had no clue what kind of response it would draw. The children absolutely love it--the repeated responses ("a dog"), Mister's bold colors, the love story between boy and dog, and the great ending. This book is a real winner!!

Mister......December 2000

I read this book and I thought it was the neatest book. I would recomend this book for children up to 5th grade. If a child is willing to listen to the story they may want to make a dog like that. I would recomend this book to parents for them to read to their children! It is a GREAT book and I like it!

I am a children's librarian

and if I could choose one book to be my favorite- this one would be it. It is rather simple in plot but you will never forget Alex and his imagination and his love for Mister. You must see this book!!
