Traditions & Encounters offers an inclusive vision of the global past one that is meaningful and appropriate for the interdependent world of contemporary times. Given the diversity of human societies, gathering and organizing the sheer mass of information in a meaningful way is a daunting challenge for any world history survey course. The seven-part chronological organization enables students to understand the development of the world through time, while also exploring broader, big-picture thematic issues in world history. Through new and revised chapter-level and part-level features, the hallmark twin themes of traditions and encounters emerge in greater clarity than ever before in this sixth edition. As a result, students have resources that enable them to move beyond the facts of history and examine the past critically, analyze causes and effects, and recognize similarities and differences across world regions and time periods. By digging deeper into the implications of world history s stories not just the who, the what, and the where, but also the why and the how students can make sense of the human past. Connect is the only integrated learning system that empowers students by continuously adapting to deliver precisely what they need, when they need it, and how they need it, so that your class time is more engaging and effective."
great way to know the early 16th to 17th history; and a nice book that talks about Haiti!

Overall, this book is a good introduction to the the beginnings of civilization towards the 1500s. It goes into good detail towards the events and the people who shaped the eras and majaor civilizations covered during this time period. Also, the book is an easy and fairly entertaining read.
Excellent text in world history

This is perhaps the leading world history text. It's a bit long, but the writing is clear, the descriptions are comprehensive, and the book covers all the world'd leading civilizations over a 5,000 period in interesting detail. You could do a lot worse if you were looking for a detailed, thorough, and well put together look at the history of the world. The previous student reviewer who appears not to have read the book b/c his professor did not like it might consider not posting reviews about book's he's never actually read. Such reviews are worthless.
Incredible Book On World History

I am a high school student, and I use this book in my Gifted AP World History class. Now, normally, I am not exactly a fan of social studies courses, but this world history course, and hence, this book, are quite fascinating. I won't get on the topic of the hours of work assigned from outlining and doing all sorts of tasks for supposed maximum retention and comprehension, which are, unsurprisingly, less than fascinating. Despite these hours, the book itself and the content in it is a very authoritative and accurate view of world history. It hits all of the major points and does a very god job of presenting the material.
