This is probably the best film every made about the navy. Navy pilots were brought to the forefront and characterized in this highly popular movie. There was a lot of dramatic license taken because a lot of scenes were far from being factual. That does not in any way take anything away from the enjoyment because it is highly entertaining and suspenseful. The soundtrack from this film is phenomenal, and is also a must buy. It is one you will never tire of watching time and time again.
My Favourite film.

Well it embraces the jingoism of the age and is now heavily cliched but these things aside it is a terrific piece of entertainment and has been a cultural phenomenon. The jingoism and the the fact that is a popcorn move aside I just wanted give a few comments about the quality of the new Digitally remastered edition. I also have the original region 1 release and now own the region 4 remastered one. I have to say the difference definately warranted the new purchase. I tend to watch DvD's on my computer screen which will show up poor screen transfers better than the TV will. The new release has a great picture and is cleaned up immensly. The DvD menu is terrific and the sound is a ripper which is really what you want with something like this. I am not a big fan of DvD extras as I tend to watch them once and be done with it as I buy the Dvd's for the films but the extra's disk here is definately interesting and some time as definately gone into it's presentation. All in all a fantastic effort. If you are considering a purchase then this is a top notch DvD. Just make sure you are ordering the remastered one.

Top Gun never claims to have epic scope, emotional gravitas, or a deep plot. I imagine that those who criticize this movie for its supposed shortcomings also look upon the Three Stooges with disgust for not exploring the depth of Moe's antagonistic relationship with Curly. The fact is that only about 10% of films released in general circulation attempt to have the depth of a Citizen Kane or Godfather. Among the other 90%, Top Gun is the best of the best. Top Gun's obvious strength is the aerial visuals. Not since perhaps Howard Hughes' Jet Pilot has there been such an ambitious attempt to capture the look and feel of high performance flight. The F-14's photogenic qualities combine with Tony Scott's signature backlighting to create a terrific sense of energy and screen presence for the Grumman bird. The tactical realism may suffer, but the tight spacing and resulting packed frames of the ACM sequqnces are uniquely energetic and fast-paced. It is a shame that this may be the last time that anyone goes to the expense and hassle of using real film to capture such manuevers. The footage still compares favorably to state of the art CGI 20 years after its release. The non-flying scenes are remarkable only for the collection of young talent that would eventually drive box office returns for a good part of the '90s. But the greatest compliment I could give the plot and acting is that they don't detract from the pacing and cohesiveness of a visually-driven movie. *RE: Review Title- OK3 is the best grade possible for US Navy pilots performing carrier landings.

The Top Gun of all the airplane flying movies

I grew up in the 80's, but I didn't really watch Top Gun until a few years ago. I definitely saw what all the fuss was about when just about everybody mentioned Top Gun as one of their favorite movies of all time. To say the least it's a damn good movie. I couldn't find hardly any flaws in it. My favorite kind of movie is a good action movie with fast paced action and although most people consider Top Gun more of a drama movie, it also has a lot of top notch action and suspense in it as well. Cruise and McGillis do a great job acting and so did all the supporting cast. I can't think of many more sequences in any movie that are more awesome than when Maverick, Iceman, Viper and the rest of the flyers take to the air close to the end of the movie and do their job against their enemies. Top Gun also is great in the drama area. It seems like Cruise and McGillis are in a real relationship throughout the movie. Not to mention that the soundtrack to Top Gun couldn't have possibly been any better for the movie. If you like movies with fast paced action sequences with a little bit of drama added in, then Top Gun is one you can't afford to miss. It's one of the classics and one of the top 3 films of the eighties.
