Tomorrow in the Battle Think on Me

Al principio, este libro me pareció difícil de seguir, y hasta un poco aburrido. Mi primera impresión es que el autor se iba por la tangente que daba gusto. Pero seguí leyendo y al poco me di cuenta de que de tangentes nada. Este libro es como un gran concierto de pensamientos, los cuales todos se centran en un punto común. Esas tangencias o periferias están diseñadas con tal habilidad que complementan la historia sin parecer superfluas: Ruibérriz, Celia/Victoria, el Único, todos caracteres bien perfilados, con mucho color, y las citas entremezcladas en el texto, las escenas de películas, todos contribuyendo a realzar una trama ya de por sí apasionante. El protagonista se debate entre decisiones tomadas y asumidas, y sus diálogos consigo mismo son de lo mejor que he leido en la literatura española en mucho tiempo. El final es imprevisible. Cuando ya pensaba que sabía por dónde iban los tiros, en el último momento me llevé una sorpresa. Qué irónica puede ser la vida, qué carcajadas se pega a nuestra costa (o en este caso a costa de Deán). Las notas adicionales (otra sorpresa que no descubrí hasta el final) son muy interesantes, y si ya por entonces me cabía alguna duda del pedazo de escritor que es Javier Marías, ahí se me borraron por completo. Esta novela es para no perdérsela.

A unique and haunting novel -- its words and ideas have stayed with me for months after completing it. Its thoughts have stimulated many philosophical discussions. It uses fiction to elaborate the questions of personal and subjective time, and the meaning of the intersubjective space. I regret I can read it only in translation. Nonetheless, the author's voice is unique and inquiring, and I can only imagine the recognition he will get in the future.

I have read four novels by Marías so far, all of them are great, but this one is the best by far. I wouldn't call it a "mystery/thriller", it is a novel about decisions one's takes and it's implications, about unevitable things and about death. The technique is impressive, recurring phrases that seem trivial at first and make more sense every time they are mentioned. Shakespeare's quotes applied to the situations. If you would read only one book by Marías, read this one.

No voy a negar que Javier Marias es uno de mis escritores preferidos y que, por tanto, mi vision y juicio objetivo, literario, de este libro se ve alterado por una cieta idealizacion hacia ese modo de escribir, de narrar, que hace de Javier Marias un escritor inconfundible en su estilo. Pese a ello, he de reconocer que alguno de sus libros no me ha gustado tanto como creia que sucederia cuando lo escogi. Sin embargo, "Mañana en la batalla piensa en mi" me sorprendio, me inicio en la busqueda de nuevos descubrimientos en la literatura comtemporanea hispanica y me ha llevado a lograr sentirme mejor con los libros que lei. Ahora ya se que clase de libros me gusta leer, y no dudo al elegir. Agradezco a Javier Marias el regalo que nos hace con su pluma y espero que lo siga haciendo para que podamos seguir disfrutando

Javier Marias has definitely written a riveting novel! Once you pick it up you can't put it down. Read in the original spanish none of the nuances are lost. The emotional and psycological roller coaster ride the protagonist boards upon the death of his "lover", in search of the answers he seeks, is uniquely written and has the reader glued to the book until the unexpected finish. A must for anyone who enjoys this type of novel!
