This book describes the life of Joseph Clarke, an Ulsterman from Newbliss, County Monaghan, Ireland. In June 1914 he arrived in Canada with his father William to farm, however returned within a year as World War One began to enlist in the Royal Irish Fusiliers of the Ulster Division of the British Army.
