This is one of those novels that came (1975), did pretty well and then just sort of went away one day. That is a shame. This is a very well written book. Basically a group of sea travelers during the 12th century are shipwrecked off the coast of Portugal. There they have little but the clothes on their backs. The group is quite mixed lot, from rich to poor, from educated to illiterate. This is the story of their survival. At the time it was published, one critic compaired it to Golding's Lord of the Flies. I can agree with that although I must admit to enjoying this one more than golding's work. If you can still find a copy of this one, it is well worth the read. I found it tucked away, far away, on one of my back book shelves recently, reread it and found it just as delightful as the first reat in the 1970s. Highly recommend.
