Things were somewhat if not very different in the decade of the 1940's. Joyce Howell was a young girl with a lot of responsibility.
At an early age, Joyce was inspired to write a book about her life. One sunny day at age 16, she sat with her mother and told her that she was going to get some kind of profession; so that if she got married and had kids, she would be able to take care of them on her own, if her husband chose to act a fool.
