The Word Eater

Pulled this off the shelf at random in the library the other day. I started reading it to my kids without any real expectations but was pleasantly surprised to discover that it was very different from other kids books. Extemely imaginative, highly creative yet displaying great empathy for kids and their perceptions of the world. The author obviously loves words and goes to considerable pains to use them sparsely. My 8-year old is crazy about it; he looks forward to it saying "what words will Fip eat today?" every night.

The Book Worm is a breath taking book about a worm named Fip, a girl named Lerner, and an evil man named Mr. Mack. Fip eats words and it's quite exciting what happens after he eats them. Lerner is new to the school and finds Fip who changes her luck completely. Mr. Mack is a buisness man who makes tacks and trains Attackaterriers (the meanist dogs who have been trained in the "Attacka" manner) The first magical happening happens to Mr Mack.The book overall is outstanding and it only took me three and one half hours to read it. I read straight through the whole book only putting it down durring school. The book is so catchy and has so many surprises that it could be classified as mystery or adventure. I personnaly loved the book and the way it was portraied.I would reccomend this book to all readers; it is not to hard to read, and it is very interesting in many ways. I think most everyone would like it becouse it hits a lot of intrests and it has some main suspense points when you wish it would just kindof give you the answer.I hope you read the book and enjoy it as much as I did.

This book is about friendship and magic. The author of this book is Mary Amato. A girl named Lerner realizes how responsible and careful she has to be. She finds a magic worm named Fip . Fip eats words and the meaning of those words dissapear! This book is very delightful and it is perfect for kids !!! . Kids real life and the story make a wonderful match!. Lerner's ex friend is in the MPOOE club [most powerful ones on earth] they do mean things to people, they want to be powerful and own the school. Will Lerner decide she will be in it or not? Will Lerner's plans became dangerous? Will earth be in danger? Will lerner and Fip's relationship end? See how curious , wonderful, undergroundy and different the world can be when you use magic.

The story is about a worm named Fip. Born with a love for eating words, he is abandoned by the Lumbricus Clan. An equally outcast girl named Lerner Chanse discovers the worm on a dare to join the MPOOE (Most Powerful Ones On Earth) Club. She soon learns that whatever words Fip eats will disappear. This is good for erasing the "attacka" out of the vicious Attackaterrier dogs and the meanness of Lerner's next-door neighbor's dad. But after her neighbor Bobby Nitz becomes her friend and helps her stop the MPOOE Club from deleting the school with Fip, the consequences of Fip's powers show through. There seems to be no way to delete his power...until he meets an unusual worm named Poly. This book is VERY, VERY funny. Especially when Fip nearly eats "oxygen" and Lerner searches the dictionary for "oxyg". One question: Is there really such a thing as a gurkengabel?

The Word Eater ties together several subplots with the main story: a young girl discovering that incredible power (but destructive power only) has been granted her in the form of a worm named Fip. The book reads on two levels, as does most good children's literature: the child's story, and the moral dilemma confronting Lerner Chanse. There's enough humor here to keep kids happily going, and enough depth to cause older (or more perceptive ones) to think. The names and the sideplots are funny and engaging.
