Best American Historical Fiction I have ever read

Mr. Wright's story of Morgan's rescue mission is phenomenal. All of the characters -- good, evil, starring, and supporting, could be real--no, they ARE real. I cannot believe that this book is out of print -- Mr. Wright's sequel to this, "The Captives", and two other books I have had the fortune to find, "Gone to Texas" and "The Last Plantation", are also wonderful tales, told from the heart. I have read "The Woodsman" and "The Captives" three to four times apiece now, and I still would stay up all night to read them again. If you have a chance to buy or read this book, DO IT.

Spellbounding!!!

The thought that is put into the characters gets the reader involved with their lives. At parts it is brutal but yet it will make you cry. It takes you to a different time and place. If you have not read the second book about Morgan the name of the book is THE CAPTIVES. I loved both of the books!!

Destined to be a favorite

I have to say that this is one of the only books that kept me up until the wee hours of the morning so that I could finish it all in one day. This was about 7 years ago and that books is literally in tatters and held together with a rubber band because I have read it time and time again. You will love the richness of the characters (that is if you can find a copy of it somewhere!) The story itself will keep your attention with it's many adventures. If you find this book anywhere, consider yourself very lucky indeed.

Great story, I loved every second I spent reading it.

I've read this book four times now and I have found something new to like every time I read it. Don Wright has brought his characters to vivid life and makes the period come alive through his descriptions of the area, the sounds, smells, heartache, savagery, and peace. Sounds like the perfect book, doesn't it? Well, for me it is.....
