One of the first fantasy books I read as a young adult was the Web of Wizardry. This book has a brillant combination of romance, world building, and adventure that should appeal to any young reader. Juanita Coulson describes several different cultures within the book with admirable detail. Without giving the plot away, the reader follows the exploits of an army scout as the land of Krantin braces for the invasion of a foreign army lead by a powerful and ruthless wizard.Cultural detail abounds as Coulson describes the conflicts between the Destre-Y (decentralized nomadic herders and fierce warriors) and the Iit (strong monarchy) as they attempt to bury years of fierce enimity to resist the new menace.Cultural details remind me of C. J. Cherryh but with much less interior dialog. The plot moves swiftly and strongly to conclusion.
