Winston Churchill Leads a Nation

In this installment of the ValueTales series, Ann Donegan Johnson describes leadership in the life of Winston Churchill (1874-1965). The book tells of Winston's lonely childhood and challenging experiences at boarding school. He is comforted by an imaginary lion named George. Winston gradually learns self-confidence and how to stand up for what he believes. After joining the army, Winston finds the courage to face danger and lead other soldiers. In later life he enters politics and works to make his country strong enough to defend itself. He inspires others to stand fast when faced with danger and disappointment. Like other books in the ValueTales series, this book uses a real-life person to exemplify an important value. It is suitable for reading by children in the later elementary school grades. A "Historical Facts" section at the book's end summarizes Churchill's life in a single-page bio form suitable for adults. Closing quote: "No matter what you want to be, you'll find the road to your dream easier if you follow Winston Churchill's example. Work hard, learn for your mistakes and believe in yourself. If you do that, you'll lead a happier and more rewarding life." (p. 62)
