Book Overview

"Makes a reader feel like a time traveler plopped down among men who were by turns vicious and visionary."--The Christian Science Monitor

The modern American economy was the creation of four men: Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller, Jay Gould, and J. P. Morgan. They were the giants of the Gilded Age, a moment of riotous growth that established America as the richest, most inventive, and most productive country on the planet...

The Tycoons

The Tycoons is a must-have resource for anyone interested in the super rich and wealthy. It is filled with stories of how the financial barons of the time spent their days and leisure.

A good book on US industrial history

It appears, that the four tycoons merely serve as "anchors" to narrate the US industrial history from about 1870 to 1920. This was the time, when the USA pulled ahead of every other country - and the book does a good job explaining why this was so: There were no MBA schools, but daring entrepreneurs without much formal education - and without fear of failure. At times, the book is a bit too dense, with too many details, but overall I recommend to anyone interested in that subject.

THE FOUR GREAT AMERICAN ENTREPRENEURS

I enjoyed very much reading the BOOK: TYCOONS by CHARLES R. MORRIS, a renowned AMERICAN HISTORIAN & SCHOLAR. Mr. MORRIS is very knowlegeable about MODERN USA HISTORY & INDUSTRIAL WORLD AFFAIRS. The tycoons were written in a very comprehensive historical ways. There are already so many books written by many AUTHORS on THE FOUR TYCOONS of AMERICAN HISTORY in MODERN TIME particularly on J.D. ROCKEFELLER & JP MORGAN, which are indeed the PRIDE of AMERICA. However, Mr. MORRIS wrote the four tycoons on a more precise & concise ways for the readers to appreciate the GREAT FREEDOM of ENTERPRISE of USA, which the WORLD would like to follow, hopefully it will enrich WORLD ECONOMY if we don't over spent on enjoyments. The TYCOONS brought the MEN and their times to life!! CHARLES R. MORRIS is a good story teller of how these four HARD WORKING & DETERMINED men brought the USA economy to the MODERN TIME, inventing a STRONG, RICH & FREE UNITED STATES of AMERICA!! I SALUTE THE TYCOONS for GOOD CITIZEN of USA!! STRONGLY RECOMMEND TYCOONS for all READERS!! I remain your friend from HONG KONG,CHINA!! RGDS, STEPHEN M. YUNG, HK,CHINA. TEL:(852) 97541382

Great summary of Economic History

This is a great book for looking at the economic history of the United States. It covers mostly the four mentioned in the title but what was really fantastic and what deserves that extra star is that it covers the economic developments on the side. It looks at how our economy outpace Europe and the shift to make America that extra superpower. WE also have a look at how our ability to move west gave us an added advantage and that we did not have to resort to colonies. While we exported much we still made tremendous gains in internal improvements. He also grasp how the development of the coronation as an institution led to the rise of clerical and accounting positions creating hundreds of service jobs. This book is incredibly well written and really holds your interest. It offered the best explanation of Gould's attempt to corner the gold market I have ever read. It is very well researched and makes references to the top economic historians out there. A must read for anyone who wants to understand how the United States developed economically
