Book Overview

In her first collection of stories and pieces, Harriet Doerr explores the magical power of memory and brings us a wealth of unforgettable characters- eccentric eighty-two-year-old Great-Aunt Alice, who, empowered by a lucid memory, lived out her final, physically debilitated years with grace; Edie, who arrives in California from England to bring sanity and peace to a house with five half-orphaned children and a despairing widower; Paco, eight years...

Good but not her best

This set of short stories is similar in tone and setting to Doerr's two novels, Stones for Ibarra and Consider This, Senora. I think you're better off to read either of the novels so that you get a full feel of Doerr's beautiful writing. This collection of short stories feels like a lot of snippets that she didn't know where to fit into her novels.

This book reads like poetry. It's been a while since I read it, but am thinking of reading it again...such a beautiful, if not sad look back on a long and rich life centered in a dry and dusty old Mexico.

We literally wouldn’t be here without our seniors, so celebrate the ones in your world for their role in creating and bringing you into it by spending time with the older, wiser, ‘been there, done that’ crowd today. But first, keep reading for a list of famous authors who either started writing late in life or kept writing until they were, well, OLD!
