It seems to be a never-ending battle. We start the day with the best of intentions. Today we are going to eat right, exercise, and control our stress. Then reality sets in. We wake up late (that stupid alarm didn't ring) to a chaotic mess of getting kids off to school on time (making sure that homework actually accompanies them). Our only aim at this point is to get to work before the boss notices. There's no time for a real breakfast, exercise, or a nice relaxing meditation session. Coffee and a donut will have to do as we drive through hectic traffic. By midmorning, adrenaline and four cups of coffee have worn off and we are starting to feel drained. To make up time lost, we skip lunch or gobble down some fast food as we try to get caught up. With some food in our stomach's we finally feel back to normal. Unfortunately, this feeling is short lived and the day drags on. We all know that we should do better. We all know that we should take the time to eat right, to exercise, and to reduce our stress. However, just getting through each day seems to take up all the energy we have. The Sugar Solution reminds us that by taking care of ourselves each day we not only reduce the risk of countless life threatening diseases but we also increase our energy levels and abilities to cope with day to day stress. More importantly though, this book unravels the mysteries of carbohydrates and provides nutritional, exercise, and stress relief programs that fit into the average person's busy life.
Essential Education for Good Health

As an ICU RN, the number one precursor I see for strokes, vascular diseases, heart attacks, poor kidney function and many other illnesses is Diabetes. Our children are getting fatter and fatter and have a life expectancy that is shorter than their grandparents and parents. WHY? Because we have never understood the effect simple carbohydrates have on our bodies. Diabetic education has previously focused on simple sugars only, not addressing simple carbohydrates and the effect they have on your blood sugar. This book explains why it is just as important to look at white rice, white potatoes, white bread, and white flour products as sugars! It is about time! You don't need to be a diabetic to get a great deal of useful information from this book, in fact, I highly recommend it to anyone who is overweight or has a parent with adult onset diabetes, or has a child who is overweight. You will learn why you have that afternoon drop in energy, why the weight is not coming off even though you have decreased your calorie intact, why a plain baked potato raises your blood sugar, and what you can do to prevent your cells from becoming resistant to insulin, or to decrease that resistance if you already have it. As others have stated, this is written in easy to understand language. It offers a lifestyle for good health, not a diet to follow till you lose a few pounds. If you are diabetic and don't have this information, you are cheating yourself of better health. If you are not diabetic and never want to be, this book has your answers. If your child is overweight, learn how to help them become healthier and more energetic while still eating great tasting food by making some healthier choices.
Excellent Book!

This is an excellent book for those who are having energy problems and not losing weight. I am not a classic binge eater, but I did not have the energy to do almost anything. I have weight to lose and nothing I was doing was working. I am a couple weeks into this book and I am feeling better already. My body-type swelling has gone down, I actually am getting up and doing things, etc. I have lose 4 lbs so far. I haven't lost weight in 4 years! This is a solution that is working for me. Although I am not a fan of the alternate sugars out there, I am using Stevia.
Concise and informative

Reviewed by Irene Watson for Reader Views (9/06) There are many books as well as theories on high blood sugar and diabetes; however, I have yet to find one that gives as detailed and concise information as "The Sugar Solution." Even though full of information, this book is very reader friendly, not using medical terms that a layperson cannot understand. It was a real pleasure for me to find all the needed information in one book. I have insulin resistance and thought I understood much of what was going on. Not. After reading "The Sugar Solution" I feel so much more informed than what my doctor was able to relay to me. Insulin resistance is a precursor to Type II Diabetes and unless looked after it will create health issues. The editors detail the importance of creating a balance within the body and give easy to follow examples of food intake to maintain sugar balance as well as maintain desirable weight. Overweight issues often accompany insulin resistance. Blood sugar problems can cause other major illnesses within the body besides diabetes. The editors cover metabolic syndrome, pre-diabetes, polycystic ovary syndrome, pregnancy diabetes, as well as childhood diabetes. The editors of "The Sugar Solution" detail weight-loss strategies, making healthy choices when eating out at restaurants, indulging in sweets and adding supplements to the eating plan. Of course, as with any maintenance plan exercise is of utmost importance. The editors present a 10 minute a day strength training regime that anyone can endure. They even present a 28-day lifestyle makeover that is easy to follow. Better yet, they even add over 60 recipes that are interesting, easy to make, and of course healthy. "The Sugar Solution" is a book to keep as a reference and a book to read for information. Most people don't realize they consume 5 pounds of sugar within a month, sweeteners have more than 50 names, and, half of Americans have insulin resistance. Reading this book the reader will not only learn how to prevent onset of diabetes, but will learn how to effectively maintain a balanced body if already diagnosed with a blood sugar related syndrome.
Essential Book! for anyone Addicted to Sugar!!

I found this book to be a lifesaver. I was so addicted to sugar, and had become hypoglycemic, to the point where I was having seizures, if I didn't eat candy or sugar, the moment I started shaking and sweating profusely. I was hungry all the time, gaining weight daily it seemed like, tired all the time, and unable to concentrate. After reading this book, and following the steps for getting off the sugar and replacing it with healthy foods, that didn't let my sugar go up and down. I had no more seizures, lost weight like crazy, I have tons of energy now, and I no longer Crave Sugar 24 hrs a day, nor am I hungry all day long. I feel like I have a life again. Not to mention my risk aren't as high for being coming diabetic, which is what my Doctor told me I surely would have before. Not that I don't have a chance of still becoming one, but before it was a SURE THING. I definetly recommend this book to anyone who struggles with sugar addiction, like I did. You will feel REBORN!
