The Soul Brothers and Sister Lou

I read this book about 14 yrs ago, when I was just ten yrs old. It is still one of my favorite books, and I try to read it at least once a year. Although I read the book in the 90's, I still understood the story within the context of its time. Sister Lou is my favorite character, and I'm so glad that the book is back in print! It's a must-read.

I remember reading this book over 20 years ago as a 12 year old in Southwest Georgia. I dreamed of the "bright lights" of the big city in which this story took place-but I could still relate to all of the "coming of age" as well as racial issues presented in the story. A great book, especially for young African American girls.

I Think This book is a good book especailly for the African American because some can relate, such as myself, to the events that is going on in this book. I think it's a good understanding of an African American cultrure in a positive manner. This book was a wonderful description of a modern day world for some African American. I also recommend this book to anybody who wishes to learn more about the African American cultures. The author, Kristin Hunrter's style of writing is Fabolous. The way she uses different dilect is a perfect and acurrate dilect in the events that takes place in the book. IT'S AFRICAN AMERICAN PRIDE!!

I read this book when I was ten years old and fell in love with the story. It portrays a young girl from the inner city struggling with poverty and family issues. In the midst of this trial she uses her gift of singing to erase her pain.Though she is faced with some moral dilemmas, her strong will and moral values instilled in her by her family help make sound decisions. This is a book for young people ages twelve to seventeen. Although they may find some of the phrases used old fashioned the issues in the book are contemporary.
