I preferred the villain to the hero. Otherwise, this was a really good book. I love the way the author combined the elements in her mystery; the story, the house, the people, the land (and Line- or border between Canada and the US) historical stuff, and current events (from the '70's). So, despite disliking a point or two, i do recommend this book for a good read.
